To get some practice for DMing a group of young adults my age, I started a D&D group with a few 12-year-olds I take care of at work (I work as a day camp counselor). They’re currently on their second session in the Lost Mines of Phandelver campaign, with a party that consists of a flirty halfling rogue, a respected neutral-good dwarf druid, and a timid elf wizard. After pissing off a local shopkeeper by accident, the three decided to take a lunch break at the local inn. Then, this happened:

Wizard (ooc): I roll to listen in on someone’s conversation.

DM (me): You overhear a dwarf miner, muttering to himself at the bar. Something about “those darn orcs, ‘festing the trails, making it darn near impossible to get any minin’ done”, you get the gist.

Wizard (ooc): I sidle up next to him for more info.

DM (ooc): Okay, but you’re going to need to roleplay this encounter. You ready?

Wizard (ooc): Uh, yeah.

Miner: Whatcha want, kid?

Wizard:

Wizard (ooc): I don’t know what to say

Rogue: Flirt with him!

Wizard: Hey… hot guy

DM: roll for charisma

Wizard (ooc): …3

DM: *sigh* the Dwarf Miner stands up and growls. “You screwin’ with me, kid? You wanna go?”

Bartender: Hey buddy, Lanar, calm down.

Druid (ooc): *stands up dramatically* I throw my handaxe at the miner! *rolls* 19!

Rest of party (ooc): NooOOOOOO

DM: (Druid) stands and hurls his handaxe across the room, plunging it in between Lanar’s eyes and killing him instantly. The inn begins to erupt into chaos as the townsfolk realize what just happened.

Rogue (ooc): WHY DID YOU DO THAT

Druid (ooc): HOW WAS I SUPPOSED TO KNOW THAT WOULD KILL HIM

DM (ooc): You threw an AXE at him

Regardless, things descended into madness quickly. The wizard slipped out without being noticed, the rogue was arrested by a militia after returning to the crime scene and accidentally kidnapping a child, and the once-proud druid attempted to hide in an alley to ambush said militia only to roll a nat 1 and fall into a trash can. Session ended with the rogue and druid demoted in alignment and thrown in jail while the wizard made fun of them from a safe distance.
